This herb is historically associated with stimulating the sexual function and energy. It is produced from cultivated roots from Korea. In 2002, an initial (blind) crossover study of Korean Red Ginseng's effects on erection problems found that it could be effective for helping with erectile dysfunction in men. 60% of the men who were involved in the research had an improvement in the ability to produce an erection.
This is an extract from the fruit of 'serenoa repens'. It is rich in fatty acids and phytosterols. It has been used in traditional, alternative and eclectic medicine to treat a number of conditions. It was used by US and European medical practitioners for over 200 years. The types of things that it was used for include asthenia or weakness, and urogenital issues. The eclectic expert Dr Felter wrote, "Saw Palmetto is a nerve sedative, expectorant, and a nutritive tonic, acting kindly upon the digestive tract...Its most direct action appears to be upon the reproductive organs when undergoing waste of tissue".
Helps with promoting the health of the circulatory system. It has been found to strengthen the heart. Hawberry is also known for strengthening blood vessels, blood clots and aiding digestion. In 2008 a medical study published in a German medical journal that proved that Hawberry juice was effective for heart and blood pressure. Furthermore, the University of Maryland Medical Centre states that the antioxidants can treat circulatory conditions. Improved blood circulation helps in enhancing sexual functions.
Ginkgo has long been cultivated in China - some of the trees at temples are believed to be over one thousand five hundred years old. Examples of the ginkgo's tenacity may be seen in Hiroshima, Japan, where six trees growing between 1 and 2 km from the 1945 atom bomb explosion were among the few living things in the area to survive the blast. While almost all other plants and animals in the area were gone, the ginkgos, though charred, survived and were soon healthy again. The trees are alive - even to this day. The herbs may have three effects on the human body: improvement in blood flow (including micro-circulation in small capillaries) to nearly all tissues and organs, protection against oxidative cell damage from free radicals, and blockage of many of the effects of platelet activation factor (platelet aggregation, blood clotting) that have been related to the development of a number of heart, renal, respiratory and central nervous system disorders. Ginkgolides (especially ginkgolide B) are potent antagonists against platelet-activating factor.
Muira Pauma Extract
The bark and root are used for a number of problems by the native/indigenous peoples in Rio Negro, South America, but the effectiveness of Muira Puama preparations are not proven. However, with that said, in a study that took place in 1990 and conducted by Mr Jacques Waynsberg at the Institute of Sexology in Paris, France, 62% of men who took the extract noted an increase in sex drive and 51% of participants reported an improved ability to get an erection.
Catuaba Bark Extract
Catuaba, a word that means "what gives strength to the Indian" is used for the infusions of the bark of a number of trees native to Brazil. An infusion of the bark is used in traditional Brazilian medicine as an aphrodisiac and central nervous system stimulant. These claims have not been either proven or in fact disproven in scientific studies, but a journalist for the Discovery Channel claimed, "Reports in scientific journals and at conferences have supported catuaba's use for sexual enhancement. In Catuaba, a group of three alkaloids dubbed catuabine A, B and C are known to enhance sexual function by stimulating the nervous system".
Dodder is also known as Cuscuta. The plant is a parasitic vine that wraps around other plants for nourishment. The seed is used in China for liver and kidney disorders and is one of the most commonly used Chinese herbs. It has a high content of flavonoids and has strong antioxidant properties. Dodder seed has been found in studies to have positive effects on sperm health and motility, and invigorates the reproductive system. The plant is used in Ayurvedic medicine to help with difficulty in urinating and muscle pain amongst other ailments. With the absence of controlled clinical trials for this seed or plant in the US or the EU, it is up to you whether you choose to believe Ayurvedic practices that have been in existence for over thousands of years.
